For weeks, the story has encouraged viewers to believe one simple narrative: Matt has manipulated Phyllis, Nick has finally lost faith in her, and Victor is once again controlling the board. But what if every one of those assumptions is wrong? What if Phyllis has never been Matt’s victim at all? Instead, every strange decision, every confusing conversation, and every unexpected alliance may be part of a much larger strategy. If this theory is correct, Matt isn’t the mastermind. He’s simply the piece Phyllis needs to strike back at Victor while protecting Nick from a distance—even if Nick never realizes she’s doing it.

This possibility becomes much more believable when looking at Phyllis’ history rather than judging only her recent actions. Throughout the years, she has built a reputation for creating plans with multiple layers. She rarely reveals her true objective until the very end, and she has often allowed everyone around her to underestimate her while quietly setting the next stage of her strategy into motion. People have mistaken her for reckless, emotional, or impulsive before, only to discover later that she had been thinking several moves ahead the entire time. That history creates a major blind spot. Many characters—and perhaps even viewers—may be making the exact same mistake again.

One recent conversation with Nick stands out more than almost anything else. Phyllis openly admitted that she didn’t like the way Nick had been behaving, then told him he needed to clean up his own life instead of relying on someone else to fix it. On the surface, those words sounded cold, almost dismissive. It appeared as though she was giving up on him. But her actions tell a completely different story. Despite creating emotional distance, she has never completely walked away. She continues to pay attention to Nick, continues making decisions that indirectly protect him, and never fully cuts him out of her life. Her words push him away, but her behavior suggests she never truly leaves his side. That contradiction raises an important question: was she rejecting Nick, or simply forcing him to become stronger while she handled a much bigger threat behind the scenes?

Matt himself may have unknowingly exposed the biggest clue. At one point, he admitted that he couldn’t figure Phyllis out and wanted to know the woman behind the mask. That line carries far more weight than it first appears. If Matt were truly manipulating her, why would he openly admit that he doesn’t understand her? A manipulator usually believes he knows exactly how his target thinks. Instead, Matt sounds like someone constantly trying—and failing—to predict Phyllis’ next move. Rather than proving that Matt controls her, the dialogue may actually suggest the opposite. Perhaps Matt has been chasing an illusion the entire time, believing he is steering the relationship while Phyllis quietly decides where it goes.

Another overlooked detail involves Victor. If Phyllis were genuinely focused only on building a relationship with Matt, Victor should hardly matter during their conversations. Yet Victor repeatedly becomes part of the discussion. Phyllis warns Matt about Victor’s influence, questions Victor’s motives, and consistently redirects attention toward him. That pattern feels deliberate. It suggests that Matt may never have been the final destination. He may simply be the safest path into Victor’s world. By keeping Matt close, Phyllis gains access to information, opportunities, and leverage that she could never obtain otherwise. Matt stops being a romantic partner and starts looking much more like an unwitting source inside Victor’s operation.

This theory also explains why Nick remains completely confused. From Nick’s perspective, the evidence is obvious. He sees Phyllis spending time with Matt, defending him, and making choices that seem impossible to understand. Naturally, he concludes that Matt has changed her or turned her against the people who care about her. But what if Nick is seeing only the performance? If Phyllis revealed her real objective, Nick would almost certainly try to stop her. He has never been comfortable with her dangerous methods, even when her intentions were good. The only way to protect both Nick and the plan might be to let him believe she has chosen the wrong side. Ironically, convincing Nick that she has abandoned him could be the very thing that keeps him safe.

The strongest argument for this theory isn’t a single scene. It’s the pattern that emerges when every clue is placed together. Phyllis once knocked Matt unconscious instead of trusting him. Later, she defended him. She criticizes Nick while continuing to watch over him. Matt admits he cannot understand her. Victor repeatedly becomes the focus of conversations that supposedly center on Matt. None of these moments prove the theory on their own. However, together they form a remarkably consistent picture. Every contradiction points toward the possibility that Phyllis is intentionally allowing everyone to misunderstand her because misunderstanding is exactly what keeps her plan alive.

If that is the case, then the biggest twist may not be Matt’s betrayal or Victor’s next move. The real shock could be that the person everyone believed had lost control has actually been controlling the game from the very beginning. Matt may think he is using Phyllis.
