Betsy Swain’s (Sydney Martin) life was turned upside down in Coronation Street last week when she suffered a stroke after participating in consensual strangulation during sex with boyfriend Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne).

The pressure Dylan exerted on Betsy’s neck damaged an artery, which caused her to have a stroke. As a result, she has been left with aphasia and dysarthria, two conditions that affect her ability to speak.

When Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) found out how Betsy’s stroke had been caused, she lashed out at a horrified Dylan, before going on to report him to the police.

Dylan struggled to get his head around the fact that he’d caused so much damage, and started accusing Betsy of cheating on him with Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey), arguing that he must have caused her stroke.

However, in a new spoiler video, it seems that Dylan is ready to accept responsibility as he visits Betsy to apologise.

He tells her that he is sorry for what happened and that he’d had no idea there were any risks involved in what they’d done.

When he begs Betsy not to hate him, she tells him that she doesn’t, and he asks what he can do to make things right.

Before Betsy can respond, they are interrupted by the arrival of a police officer, who has come to take Betsy’s statement. She asks Dylan to leave, so he makes himself scarce.

What will Betsy tell the police officer? Could Dylan be set to face the long arm of the law for causing Betsy’s stroke?

‘It’s such a tricky situation,’ actress Sydney Martin exclusively told Metro. ‘She’s got a detective as a mum, who’s going to know the ins and outs of the law, which the average person wouldn’t.

‘It’s only a recent law that’s been brought in. I remember talking about this with the charities. Even with consent, if someone has been physically injured from it, he is still liable by law and could be charged.’

She continued: ‘As the audience has reacted, they didn’t know that this could happen. He didn’t know that this could happen either. He wouldn’t intentionally hurt her, and I believe that. I think that’s what’s so important.’

She added that, going forward, we will see the reaction from the residents of Coronation Street, many of whom are equally as naïve to the dangers of strangulation during sex.

‘You’ll see the wider community’s reaction to this, and some of them are like, “Well, I didn’t know that could happen. I’ve done that before…”
